This morning, I watched an episode of The West Wing that I hadn’t seen in a long time. I remember it being one of the better ones but couldn’t quite remember why. The episode is called “Let Bartlet Be Bartlet” and in a nutshell, the President get called out for being too soft on everything because he’s more concerned with reelection than rocking the boat and making change.
It got me thinking about how often we do that in life. We don’t want to come off as too bossy, so we bite our tongue. We don’t want to come off as too desperate, so we bite our tongue. And it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about work or relationships or even sending back soup at a restaurant. We bite our tongues because we’re scared to be ourselves.
Maybe it’s for us to try being Bartlet for a change.
