One of the questions I ask potential and current clients the most is “How do you like to be marketed to?”
The reason for this is oftentimes, a client will say they want to send out an email every day for a week or post 75 Facebook ads or any number of annoying combinations to get potential customers’ attention. Yet, if that same client had a company blowing up their timeline, they would get irritated and hide the ads.
So, as the old adage goes, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Market to your customers the way you like to be marketed to. It’s my favorite and easiest marketing advice to give.
In a perfect world, we would have the marketing budget that Coca-Cola or Nike has and could conduct focus groups and test markets and all sorts of fun, data-gathering activities to make our marketing as effective as possible. But we don’t, so an easy way to copy that is to think about yourself or reach out to your social circle and talk to the people whose demographics match your target market. Find out how they like to be marketed to and use that information to craft your own marketing strategy. And hey, if they like getting emails every day, then send them emails every day. But don’t assume that’s the best way – especially if you are prone to hit the unsubscribe button.
